Research presented at 2023 Conference now in a new edited collection
The research papers presented at the Kerry Civil War Conference in 2023 are the subject of a new publication from Four Courts Press which shares the story of the Civil War in Kerry and beyond and its many memories and legacies. The book is edited by the organisers of the conference, Bridget McAuliffe, Mary McAuliffe and Owen O’Shea and brings together a wide range of experts, academics and historians in the first collection of its kind.
The Irish Civil War was fought with a greater intensity, violence and longevity in County Kerry than in any other Irish county, leaving behind a bitter and divisive legacy that endured for generations. Drawing on new archival material and offering previously unexplored interpretations and analyses of events, this collection of essays sets the tumultuous and traumatic events in Kerry in their local and national contexts and provides new understandings about why the divisions in the county were so traumatic and long-lasting.

Bridget McAuliffe, Mary McAuliffe and Owen O’Shea organised and hosted the Kerry Civil War Conference in 2023, which was part of the State’s Decade of Centenaries Programme. They are co-editors of Kerry 1916: histories and legacies of the Easter Rising – a centenary record (2016).
The new book is supported by the Department of Culture, Communications and Sport, Kerry County Council and Kerry Library.
